Summary

Symptoms

  1. When typing a large paragraph of text, there is a noticeable lag between typing and the characters appearing.

  2. Lag will also be noticeable when inserting other types of data such as images or macros.

  3. On Confluence 4.1, using find and replace within the editor can be slow when selecting find next or replace all.

Diagnosis

This is specific to editing a large paragraph in a Safari browser. A "typically" sized paragraph, commonly between 4 and 6 sentences, will show not display any lag.

Cause

Safari's built in spell-checking is taking too long to process a long paragraph of text.

Solution

Workaround

On Safari, go to Edit > Spelling and Grammar and uncheck the option Check Spelling While Typing.
