Automatic links to Confluence from JIRA issue not working

Problem
The feature for automatic links to Confluence from JIRA (5.0 or newer) are not working as described after following the documentation.
Link JIRA Issues to Confluence Pages Automatically
Cause
If you are running compatible versions of Confluence and JIRA for this feature, the issue is most likely due to having the remote API disabled.
