Changing ownership of a Bitbucket Cloud shared workspace
Platform Notice: Cloud Only - This article only applies to Atlassian products on the cloud platform.
Summary
This article explains how to change the ownership of a shared Bitbucket Cloud workspace.
Determining ownership
The following are considered owners of a workspace:
Workspace administrators
Users designated as a Billing contact and/or a Technical contact for the license at https://www.atlassian.com/purchase/my/.
Solution
If you are a workspace administrator, you can transfer ownership of a shared workspace by adding new administrators and another user as a billing and technical contact for the Bitbucket license. The latter is possible if you are already a billing or technical contact for the license yourself in https://www.atlassian.com/purchase/my/.
Please remember that a billing or technical contact does not get access to the workspace at https://bitbucket.org/. If you want the new user to be able to access the workspace at https://bitbucket.org/, you will also need to add them to a user group that has product access.
Adding a new administrator
If you are a workspace admin, you can add new administrators. The steps to do that differ depending on whether your workspace has user management at https://bitbucket.org/ or at Atlassian Admin. You can follow the steps below to figure out where your workspace has user management:
Open your workspace's page at
https://bitbucket.org/workspace_id/
, replacing workspace_id in the URL with the ID of your workspace.Select the cog icon from the top right corner (right next to your avatar).
Select Workspace settings.
On the left sidebar, look at the options under the heading Access Management.
If you see the option User groups listed there, then your workspace has user management at https://bitbucket.org.
If you don't see the option User groups listed there, then your workspace has user management at Atlassian Admin.
Workspace with user management at Bitbucket
Go to your workspace at
https://bitbucket.org/workspace_id/
, replacing workspace_id in the URL with the ID of your workspace.Select the cog icon from the top right corner (right next to your avatar).
Select Workspace settings.
Select User groups from the left sidebar
On the new page, find and select the Administrators user groups.
Select the Add members button (top right corner)
In the Add new members dialogue, either type the user's name (if they already have workspace access) or their email address. Then select Confirm.
If the user doesn't already have workspace access, they will need to accept the email invitation to gain access and become an administrator.
Workspace with user management at Atlassian Admin
Go to your workspace at
https://bitbucket.org/workspace_id/
, replacing workspace_id in the URL with the ID of your workspace.Select the cog icon from the top right corner (right next to your avatar).
Select User management.
You will be redirected to Atlassian Admin.
Select Groups from the left sidebar.
In the list of groups, locate the administrators user group for your Bitbucket workspace. The default name of this group is bitbucket-admins-workspace-id (where workspace-id is the ID of your workspace, but it may have been renamed). Take a note of the group's name.
If you'd like the new admin to manage user access at Atlassian Admin, you may want to add them to the access admins group as well. The default name of this group is bitbucket-user-access-admins-workspace-id, (where workspace-id is the ID of your workspace, but it may have been renamed). Take a note of this group's name as well.
Select Users from the left sidebar, and then select Invite users.
On the new page, enter the user's email address, and select their product role for each product listed. Ensure that the roles Product admin and User access admin are selected for the Bitbucket workspace you want to add this user to as an admin.
In the Group membership field, enter the names of the administrators and user access groups for the Bitbucket workspace.
Select the button Invite users from the bottom of the page.
ℹ️ If you don't have administrator access to the shared workspace, you may need to ask an existing administrator to follow the steps above.
Adding a new billing and technical contact
You need to be listed as a billing and technical contact for this license to add new contacts. You can follow these steps to figure out if you are already a billing and technical contact:
Log in to https://www.atlassian.com/purchase/my/.
Scroll down to the table called Licenses.
If you see your Bitbucket workspace's ID listed there, you are either a billing or technical contact for the license, or both. Select the row with your workspace ID to expand the license's details.
In the Contact details section, you can add another user in the Technical and Billing contacts.
The user you have added will need to log in to https://www.atlassian.com/purchase/my/ with their email address, and select Make Primary next to their email address to become the primary contact. They can then remove you from the Billing and Technical contacts.
If you are a workspace administrator and don't see the Bitbucket license listed in https://www.atlassian.com/purchase/my/, you can contact our billing and licensing team and ask them who the billing and technical contacts are.
In case you are not a workspace administrator
If you are not a workspace administrator, your workspace admin has left the company, and there is no other workspace admin, you can transfer the repositories to a different workspace you administer.
To transfer the repos, you need admin access. For more information, read the knowledge-based article on how to migrate a Bitbucket Cloud workspace to another workspace.
If you encounter any issues following the above steps, please feel free to raise a support ticket or raise a community support ticket for further assistance.
