Jira Automation Error: You do not have permission to manage the rules, contact your site admin.

Diagnosis

When navigating to the Project Settings > Automation, user receives an error noting "You do not have permission to manage the rules, contact your site admin."

Cause

  • Users who are part of the projects and have browse permission are unable to edit the automation rules in those projects.

  • The projects here could be team-managed or company-man

  • aged business or software projects.

  • the users get an error: You do not have permission to manage the rules, contact your site admin.

Solution

Please find the steps on how we can fix this.

Permissions for Company Managed Software or Business projects:

  • Kindly validate if the user who is facing the error has the Browse permission, Create issue, and Edit permissions

  • Here to validate we can navigate to project settings > Permissions > and check for

    Browse Projects, Create Issues, and Edit Issues.

  • Kindly also validate if the user can see all issues in the projects.

  • If the user has all the permissions, the next step here would be validation of the global automation permission via Settings > System > Global Automation > ... > Global Configuration

  • If Allow project administrators to manage project rules is checked and no groups are added that means all project admins can edit and manage the rules in all projects they have access to

  • If Allow project administrators to manage project rules is checked and few groups are added that means only users part of the groups can edit and manage the rules in all projects they have access to.

Resolution:

  • Either uncheck the Allow project administrators to manage project rules, which means all users who have necessary permissions in the projects can manage and edit rules

  • Or you may add the groups that the user is part of in the global configuration and the users should be able to manage and edit rules.

Permissions for Team Managed Software or Business projects:

  • Kindly validate if the user who is facing the error has the necessary admin roles to manage the projects.

  • Here to validate we can navigate to project settings > Access > check the admin roles and see if the user is part of the project.

  • Kindly also validate if the user can see all issues in the projects.

  • If the user has all the permissions, the next step here would be validation of the global automation permission via Settings > System > Global Automation > ... > Global Configuration
