Automation | On creation of standard issue, Auto-Create different types of sub-tasks depending upon type of Parent's type.

Summary

This article explains how to create a specific sub-task issue type automatically under a parent when a new standard issue is created.

This is applicable for scenarios where you have multiple subtask issue types in the project and a specific subtask is required to be created based on the parent selected.

Solution

At the moment, in Jira, it's not possible to restrict sub-task creation based on an issue type. If the sub-task issue type is associated with the issue type scheme of the project, then all the issue types would show the available subtasks under the Create Subtasks option. We do have a Feature Request raised for this scenario: JRACLOUD-7990: Restrict sub-tasks by issue type

However, we can create specific subtasks when a parent issue type is created using an automation rule.

  • One of the possible ways to have specific subtasks created for a parent issue type is by using an automation rule as configured below:

Automation rule to create sub-tasks depending upon PARENT

  • The rule can further be modified to include additional conditions for parent issue types and their specific sub-task issue types.
