View sub-tasks directly on a Team-managed Jira board's backlog

Platform Notice: Cloud Only - This article only applies to Atlassian apps on the cloud platform.

Summary

You're working in a Team-managed Jira Cloud project, and want to be able to view your project's sub-tasks in the Backlog area of your project board.

Currently, there's no way to view sub-tasks on your pre-existing Team-managed board. We are tracking interest in having this functionality via a suggestion ticket, which you can find here: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-87247

In the meantime, we can create a new board that will allow us to view this project's sub-tasks similar to the way a board from a Company-managed project functions.

Solution

Create a new board and adjust the filter

  1. Navigate to All boards and select Create

    • This page will be found on your site at: https://<site-name>.atlassian.net/jira/boards

  2. Select Board from an existing project

  3. Select one of your existing Company-managed projects

  4. For Board location, choose one of the Company-managed projects, or scroll to the bottom of the list and select a user’s profile

  5. Once the board is created, navigate to Board Settings

  6. Select Edit filter query and update the JQL to fetch work items from the desired Team-managed project

  7. Run the search and Save the filter

  8. Return to the board and refresh it

  9. Navigate to Board Settings > Layout > Column

  10. Remove the statuses from the previous Company-managed project

  11. Map the statuses from the Team-managed project

The backlog will now display sub-tasks nested under their parent work item.
