Can't see Jira avatars, only default image appears

Platform Notice: Cloud Only - This article only applies to Atlassian apps on the cloud platform.

Summary

One or more users don't see actual user avatars in Jira. Instead, they see the default image. These are not broken links, but are defaulting to stock images.

This is generally related to the Browse Users Global Permission in Jira. If you don't have this permission, you will not see that user's details (including their avatar picture).

Set the Browse Users global permission

Check what groups are assigned to the Browse Users Global Permission:

  1. Select the Settings cog icon > System > Global permissions

  2. This page lists which groups have the Browse Users permission

    • This will usually be jira-users, users, and/or jira-access

  3. Add any necessary groups, including a group that affected users belong to

Once users have been added to this permission, avatar images should load as expected.
