Custom epics not appearing as expected on Jira board, backlog and timeline

Platform Notice: Cloud Only - This article only applies to Atlassian apps on the cloud platform.

Summary

By default, the Epic work type will be associated Epic level in Jira’s work item type hierarchy. To better reflect how your teams work, you can add additional Jira work types and associate them with the Epic level. These are called custom (or non-system) epics.

However, custom work item types that you have set at the Epic level within your work hierarchy are not being displayed as expected in the backlog, board and timeline of your software project.

Only system epics appear in Epic Panel

While custom epics are functionally the same as the default Epic work type, they may not appear as expected throughout your software project. For example, custom epics are not displayed in the epic panel and epic filter on your backlog, and are instead shown alongside your story-level work, as seen in the below screenshot:

Similarly, custom epics are grouped as issues without epics on your board. Child issues do not display the name of custom epics on their issue cards on both the board and backlog.

While custom epic work types are not currently supported in these experiences, we are tracking this as a feature request: JRACLOUD-89899
