MySQL Unknown table engine Innodb

Summary

Symptoms

Cannot access Confluence after startup. Null pointer exception displays when accessing the baseUrl.

The following appears in the atlassian-confluence.log:

Last acquisition attempt exception: com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.MySQLSyntaxErrorException: Unknown table engine 'InnoDB'   WARN [main] [sf.hibernate.cfg.SettingsFactory] buildSettings Could not obtain connection metadata java.sql.SQLException: Connections could not be acquired from the underlying database!   Caused by: com.mchange.v2.resourcepool.CannotAcquireResourceException: A ResourcePool could not acquire a resource from its primary factory or source.

Diagnosis

Specific environments affected:

  • MySQL 5.1

Cause

Installed on certain linux distributions will not, by default, install the innodb storage engine.

Resolution

  • Upgrade to MySQL 5.5 as the storage engine is enabled by default for the affected linux distribution
