Manage component types

Compass offers predefined component types, such as service, application, library, and many more. However, developer teams at companies of all sizes sometimes use different names for these types.

The number of component types a product admin can create depends on your Compass plan. On a Premium plan, admins can create up to 14 component types. On a Standard plan, they can create up to three. Regardless of the plan, once a component type is created, anyone can use it.

This customization helps software teams better group components at a high level across their distributed architecture. It ensures they can set up their catalog to align with the words they use every day.

Create a component type

In Compass, product admins can create new component types that use the same information found in the standard schema of predefined component types.

1. Select the settings icon (), then Settings.

2. From the sidebar, select Component types.

3. On the page, select Create component type.

4. Add details to help the component type.

5. Select Create.

View, edit, or delete a component type

Once you’ve created at least one component type, you’ll be able to view the type name, description, and how many components it is applied to on the Component types page. In addition, product admins can edit or delete only the component types they’ve created. Predefined component types can’t be edited nor deleted.

To edit a component type:

1. Select the more actions icon ().

2. Select Edit.

3. Once you’ve updated the component type’s details, select Save.

To delete a component type:

1. Select the more actions icon ().

2. Select Delete.

3. Select a different component type from the dropdown menu.

4. Select Change and delete type.

Once completed, all relevant components will be associated with the new type.
