How to estimate your carbon footprint per user in Atlassian Cloud
Platform Notice: Cloud Only - This article only applies to Atlassian apps on the cloud platform.
Summary
This article explains how Atlassian customers can estimate their carbon footprint per user or per Atlassian license in the Jira Cloud environment using Atlassian's Sustainability Report, annual revenue data, and optional third-party tools. Currently, Atlassian does not provide a built-in feature or direct tool to calculate the carbon footprint usage per cloud instance or user license. However, you can estimate your organization's carbon footprint by correlating your annual spend with Atlassian's reported emissions.
Solution
Atlassian’s Annual Revenue for FY24 (100%)

Your Organization’s Annual Spend with Atlassian (x%)
This can typically be retrieved from your billing records or invoices.
Atlassian’s Total Carbon Emissions for FY24 (100%)
Refer to the Total Footprint (Scope 1 + Scope 2 [market-based] + Scope 3) Report Link: Atlassian Sustainability Report – Page 39 - https://www.atlassian.com/company/corporate-social-responsibility/report
Using these, you can apply this formula:
Estimated Carbon Footprint Share = (Your Spend ÷ Atlassian Annual Revenue) × Atlassian Total Emissions
This approach assumes your environmental impact is proportional to your economic contribution.
Example Calculation:
Atlassian Annual Revenue (FY24): $4 billion
Your Annual Spend: $200,000
Atlassian Total Emissions (S1 + S2 + S3): 50,000 metric tons CO₂e
Your contribution = (200,000 ÷ 4,000,000,000) × 50,000 = 2.5 metric tons CO₂e annually
You can explore the third-party app "Sustainian – Free Carbon Footprint Tracking for Jira" from Atlassian Marketplace: https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1234340/sustainian-free-carbon-footprint-tracking-for-jira?tab=overview&hosting=cloud)
This is a third-party solution shared on a best-effort basis. Atlassian does not officially support or endorse external tools. Please test it in a staging instance and contact the vendor directly for support or feature clarification.
